Musicology faculty member David Hildebrand is working on a new CD/music book set, tentatively entitled Music of the War of 1812 in America, which involves ballads, patriotic songs, marches, and dance tunes, many directly related to Baltimore and the greater Chesapeake region. This project carefully conveys the true story of the many parodies of To Anacreon in Heaven. Some people still think Francis Scott Key wrote a “poem” later set to music, but Hildebrand proves otherwise; he maintains that Key wrote lyrics to a melody used and re-used for patriotic purposes for decades preceding the bombardment of Ft. McHenry.
