Helen Callus (GPD ’94)

Helen Callus (GPD ’94) recorded the complete works for viola and orchestra by Gordon Jacob with the BBC Concert Orchestra in London. She also recorded a new work written for her by Rachel Matthews (MM’91, DMA ’94, Piano)  which recently won the top prize in the American Viola Society’s Maurice Gardner Composition Competition. Last September, she recorded the complete Bach Suites in Domaine Forget, Quebec, for Canada’s independent record company, Analekta.

Callus has also been busy making guest appearances with the Tokyo and Juilliard String Quartets; in studio live radio appearances for Performance Today and Saint Paul Sunday.

Recently awarded full professorship at the University of California, Santa Barbara, she has taught over 40 master classes at conservatories around the country including the Cleveland Institute, New England Conservatory, Rice School of Music, Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music and residencies at Indiana University and the Colburn School in Los Angeles. Past president of the American Viola Society, she continues to be active as an advocate for the viola with articles published in  Strings magazine and other publications.
