David Smooke’s “non-opera” was performed in NYC

A new fully staged production by Peabody faculty artist David Smooke, Criminal Element – a 40-minute “non-opera,” commissioned by Rhymes With Opera and based loosely around the story of outlaw French bank trader Jerome Kerviel, with an invented language by Smooke were performed in New York and Baltimore in July. Also on the program are 12 one-minute operas, including ones by alumni Judah Adashi (MM ’02, DMA ’11, Composition), Jenny Beck (BM ’08, Composition), Joshua Bornfield (DMA ’13, Composition), Alexandra Gardner (MM ’97, Composition), Mark Lackey (MM ’02, DMA ’09, Composition), and Anna Meadors (BM ’11, Saxophone).
