Ensemble Kolossus, led by jazz bass faculty artist Michael Formanek, received a review in The New York Times on its performance at the Jazz Standard on Wednesday, March 23. The review by Nate Chinen, titled “Delivering a Touch of Big Band Through a Jazz Collective,” was published on Thursday, March 24. The ensemble performed works by Mr. Formanek from his recent CD release, “The Distance,” on ECM Records. “The scope of the music was malleable, sometimes marshaling the band’s full power — as on “Impenetrable,” whose staccato fanfare hit like a round of defibrillator jolts — and sometimes paring down to leaner subunits,” wrote Mr. Chinen.
