A Baltimore Sun article titled The origin of the Navy’s ‘Anchors Aweigh’ by Paul McCardell features the famous rally song by Peabody alumnus and U.S. Naval Academy bandmaster, Lt. Charles A. “Zimmy” Zimmermann. Anchors Aweigh was composed by Mr. Zimmerman, with text by Midshipman Alfred A. “Monk” Miles, in 1906 in efforts to inspire the Navy football team to defeat the Army after a 6 year losing streak, which resulted in the Navy defeating the Army 10-0. Anchors Aweigh has been a staple of the U.S. Navy for 110 years.
