POPPAEA, a new opera by composition professor Michael Hersch (BM ’95, MM ’97, Composition), had its world premiere at Festival ZeitRäume Basel on September 10, 2021. The one-act opera is set to a libretto by Stephanie Fleischmann and features associate professor of voice Ah Young Hong (BM ’98, MM ’01, Voice) and offers an original 21st-century take on the story of a Roman Empress, the ways she is abused and silenced, and her own cruelty and desires.
