Gemma New (MM ’11, Conducting) led the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Edinburgh and Glasgow in a program of Ligeti, Gershwin, Milhaud, Mussorgsky, and Glazunov’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone & Strings with soloist Jess Gillam—and artist James Mayhew painting onstage. The Scotsman reported the program shouldn’t work but did, “magnificently, in a concert that was as unashamedly entertaining as it was intoxicating – and genuinely moving too.”
