Alison Moritz Named Interim Director of Peabody Opera

Alison MoritzThe Peabody Conservatory will welcome Alison Moritz to its faculty as interim managing director of opera theater for the 2021-22 academic year.

As a stage director, Moritz is known for her incisive takes on contemporary American opera and her innovative interpretations of the classic repertoire. Her original productions have been mounted at Washington National Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Opera Omaha, the Ravinia Festival, Tanglewood, New Orleans Opera, Madison Opera, and Opera Santa Barbara, and she has also directed new stagings at Central City Opera, Opera Colorado, and Opera Memphis. Committed to developing American operatic repertoire, Moritz has helmed several world premieres including Proving Up (Mazzoli/Vavrek) and Taking Up Serpents (Sankaram/Dye), and she has workshopped works by Rene Orth and David Hertzberg for Opera Philadelphia. In the fall of 2020, Alison made her first foray into the world of Virtual Reality directing a new adaptation of Miranda (Sankaram/Reese; co-produced by Opera Omaha and Tri-Cities Opera).

As a teacher and guest director, Moritz has taught at Rice University, Bard Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Maryland Opera Studio, Crane School of Music, and for Steven Blier and Caramoor’s Vocal Rising Stars program. Her professional credits also include engagements with Santa Fe Opera, Seattle Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Minnesota Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Atlanta Opera, and Chautauqua Opera.
