The Made in Baltimore commissioning project commissions young composers to write works for the guitar, either solo or in ensemble, works that are performed by local classical guitarists. Three of the four awardees this year are from Peabody: Zhishu Chang (MM ’22, Composition), Zac Fick-Cambria (MM ’22, Composition), and Antonio Sanz Escallón (Current Master’s Candidate, Composition).

Zhishu’s piece As Dawn Takes Rosy Steps takes inspiration from Baltimore’s urban landscape while Antonio’s piece, City Fragments, is inspired by Penn Station, the Harbor, and the Washington Monument, and Zac’s piece, Frew Tape, 1982, takes inspiration from purported footage of “Chessie,” the Chesapeake Bay Sea Monster.
The world premieres will be given by Peabody guitar majors Junhong Kuang (BM ’20, Guitar), Samuel Liang (Current Master’s Candidate, Guitar), Gwenyth Aggeler (BM ’24, Guitar), Penelope Shvarts (Current Bachelor’s Candidate, Guitar), Andres Felipe Palacios (Current Bachelor’s Candidate, Guitar), and David Manzanares (BM ’24, Guitar).
The hour-long concert will include short interviews on stage with the composers about their works and the inspiration behind them.
This commissioning concert is supported by Musica Canis Avem.
