Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Kris Chesky co-authored a paper on measuring musician identity that was recently published in the peer-reviewed clinical medical journal Medical Problems of Performing Artists. The study was authored by Performing Arts and Health postdoctoral fellow Nabeel Zuhdi in collaboration with Craig Neuman, a Regents Professor at the University of North Texas.

The paper, “Musician Identity Measurement Scale: A Validation Study,” examined the Musician Identity Measurement Scale (MIMS), Chesky’s adaptation of the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS)—a widely used tool that has enabled sport psychology researchers to assess athletic identity—to measure and assess musician identity. The study provides evidence that MIMS is a valid instrument for measuring musician identity and suggest that it could be used as a research tool in music psychology, music education, sociology, and occupational therapy.
