Maria Mathieson, executive director of the Peabody Preparatory, was named executive director of the Choral Arts Society of Washington, the acclaimed symphonic chorus that the late conductor, composer, and organist Norman Scribner (BM ’61, Organ) founded in 1965. She starts at her new position in May. Mathieson joined the Preparatory in 2018 and has led a period of growth including the addition of a new campus in Frederick, expansion of Howard County campuses, and the creation of new program offerings.
The Preparatory’s Tuned-In and the Baltimore-Washington Musical Pathways programs have grown during her tenure, providing significant opportunities for underserved young musicians in the Baltimore region. She led the Preparatory’s transition to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and over the last year, she has been instrumental in leading the Preparatory through its latest strategic planning process, shaping the future of the Preparatory’s growing non-credit offerings.
