A collaboration between Peabody and the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences brings Berklee College of Music professor and jazz artist Ralph Peterson Jr. to Baltimore to teach, perform, and discuss the role of musicians in the context of political protest. Hollis Robbins, Peabody Humanities Department chair and director for the Center for Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins, was featured in The Johns Hopkins News-Letter for organizing a conversation on the relationship between black music and social movements with Mr. Peterson and Lester Spence, Johns Hopkins associate professor of political science and Africana studies on Thursday, October 1. “So many Krieger School students and Peabody students were involved in the protesting of Freddie Gray and were involved in the marches back in April and May. I wanted to put together an event that allowed students and faculty to discuss the role of music in #BlackLivesMatter. When we got Ralph Peterson to come as the 2015 Artist-in-Residence for Africana studies, I thought he’d be the perfect person to discuss the role of music in protests,” said Robbins.
