Partnership enriches the El Paso community while helping students train for careers in Music.
The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and El Paso Pro-Musica, under the artistic direction of Peabody alumnus and world renowned cellist Zuill Bailey, are preparing to launch the second season of the Young Artist Development Series. The program is designed to bring the study of musical performance beyond mastery of technique and musicianship and into the context of community engagement.
The second recipients of the internship are the Marquee Brass, a quintet of graduate and doctoral students at the Peabody Conservatory. The ensemble was selected by a team from Peabody, Zuill Bailey and El Paso Pro-Musica Executive Director Felipa Solis based on their musicianship, artistic collaboration, communication skills, and experience in connecting with diverse audiences.
The Marquee Brass will travel to El Paso, Texas, from November 12 through 18 for a week of performance and community engagement experience. Their internship will include musical outreach, both at schools and public venues including master classes at the University of Texas at El Paso, concert appearances in El Paso and Las Cruces, New Mexico, and special presentations. They will appear on NPR and network television affiliates in the region in performance and to discuss their participation in the YADS. The quintet will work alongside El Paso Pro-Musica Artistic Director Zuill Bailey, a graduate of the Peabody Institute and a Peabody Distinguished Alumni recipient.

Zuill Bailey, with a career that includes a robust concert touring schedule, also works as the artistic director of four music festivals around the country. The Young Artist Development Series will expand to Mesa, Arizona, for the Mesa Arts Center, “Classical Inside and Out,” program in 2017 with the same opportunities, mentoring, and training.

Marquee Brass brings together five virtuoso musicians who deliver unforgettable concerts for listeners of all ages. Merging masterful technique, witty arrangements, and lively presentation, the group delights audiences across the Baltimore-Washington region.
Trumpeter Brandon Cave performs regularly throughout the Baltimore/D.C. area as a soloist and chamber musician. Recently named second trumpet of the American Pops Orchestra, he is also a member of the brass faculty of the Baltimore School of Music ,as well as the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. At the Peabody Conservatory, he is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate, studying with Josef Burgstaller.
Buddy Deshler, trumpet, is an XO Performing Artist for Jupiter Band Instruments as well as an Artist for Denis Wick, DANSR Inc. He received the Bachelor of Music and Artist Diploma degrees from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and is currently a Master of Music candidate at the Peabody Conservatory.
Michael Minor recently graduated from Virginia Tech with a BA in Music, concentrating in Performance and Technology and is currently pursuing a MM in Tuba Performance at the Peabody Conservatory, studying with the David Fedderly (Northwestern). He currently performs with the Peabody Concert Orchestra and Five Guys Brass. In his time at Virginia Tech, Mr. Minor performed with the Virginia Tech Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the New River Valley Symphony. He was also a member of the Virginia Tech Faculty Brass quintet as well as Quantum Brass Quintet, Virginia Tech’s premier student brass ensemble. Mr. Minor previously studied with David Porter (USAFB ret.) and Jay Crone (DMA University of Southern California)
Ricson Poonin joins the Peabody trombone department as a Master of Music degree candidate in the studio of James Olin. On leave from the Philippine Philharmonic, he is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and has performed with the Philippine Pops Orchestra, AMP Big Band, and in professional theater productions, as well as recorded and toured with the Asian Youth Orchestra and the Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.
Sam Bessen is an active horn performer and educator from Denver, Colorado. There, he frequently performed outreach concerts for younger audiences as a member of the Lamont Brass Quintet, with organizations such as the Friends of Chamber Music and the Aspen Music Festival. Mr. Bessen is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree in Horn Performance with Denise Tryon at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore.
