José Manuel Lezcano (BM ’81, Guitar) performed a solo recital on June 29, 2018 of Iberoamerican works for guitar, at Convento de San Agusti, by invitation of the Barcelona Festival of Song. He also rehearsed and performed with student and professional singers at the festival, which is dedicated to the performance and dissemination of art-songs in Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, and indigenous American languages. Dr. Lezcano was also invited to give a lecture recital at the international Animamusic Congresso de Organologia, in Caldas de Reinha, Portugal, July 7, 2018; “The Guitar in Spain: Musical Reflections of a Turbulent History.” He performed complete works and excerpts from 500 years of Spanish guitar repertory, contextualizing the guitar as an instrument that reflects the main currents of Spain’s turbulent history, including the Inquisition, the Peninsular Wars, the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), and how composers were affected, exiled, or silenced.
