The Friedheim Library has recently digitized the audio recordings of three 1984 concerts featuring works by Black composers. The three-day National Black Music Theater Symposium was held at Peabody in February 1984 as a co-production of the Peabody Institute and Morgan State University. The Peabody Chamber Orchestra and the Choral Ensemble of Morgan State presented the opera “Ernestine” by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, in its first performance since 1777, with a lead performance by Prep alumna Yvette Matthews. Stanley Thurston conducted the Fernando Allen Singers in songs by James Bland and a world premiere of a Will Marion Cook arrangement. Visiting baritone Ben Holt performed songs with pianist Cliff Jackson. Recordings are now available in Peabody’s streaming collections.
