The 2021 Wien Opera production of Poppea—the opera by faculty composer Michael Hersch (BM ’95, MM ’97, Composition) and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, co-starring faculty artist Ah Young Hong (BM ’98, MM ’01, Voice)—was nominated for an Austrian Music Theater Award (Österreichischer Musiktheater Preis) in the category Best Contemporary Musical Theater (Bestes Zeitgenössiches Musiktheater). The results will be announced in September. In June, Medea—Hersch and Fleishmann’s latest opera collaboration and commission by Ensemble Musikfabrik and Kunststiftung NRW—was world premiered in Cologne. Hersch reflects on his evolving inspirations and how the piece was developed.
