Peabody dance faculty Brinae Ali was in Lagos, Nigeria, for 16 days as part of the Next Level cohort of hip-hop artists/educators-in-residency. Next Level is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Meridian International Center to use hip-hop music, dance, and art to foster cross-cultural creative exchange in diverse communities. Ali, along with graf artist Reds, rapper JSWISS, beatmaker/organizer Melbeats have been based out of Ogidi Studios, performing for and collaborating with local artists, and Ali has talked about tap dancing stereotypes on Nigerian radio, held tap workshops, co-creating a piece with student, and more.
