Preparatory’s Brandon Woody Appears in Lady of the Lake as Roy “Tanglefoot” McCoy

Headshot of Brandon WoodyPeabody Preparatory alumnus Brandon Woody appears as late Baltimore trumpeter Roy “Tanglefoot” McCoy, a member of the house band at the Royal Theatre on Pennsylvania Avenue in the 1930s, in Apple TV’s Lady in the Lake series, part of which was shot on campus. Woody’s band in the show also includes faculty artists Tim Green and Kris Funn. McCoy, who passed away in 2001, was one of the Baltimore musicians the late Peabody archivist Elizabeth Schaaf interviewed (online here) as part of the Sounds and Stories oral history project about the musical life of Baltimore’s Black community, and the Peabody Archives Repository includes a collection of McCoy’s photos, dating 1935 to ’65, featuring musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, the Honeydrippers, and more.
