Amy Carol Branum (BM ’76, Music Education) was the 2026 recipient of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE) Lifetime Achievement Award. OAKE describes this award as recognizing the rare person whose extensive, far-reaching impact on Kodály music education goes beyond excellence in teaching, leadership, or research to leave an indelible mark on American Kodály music education.
Following her graduation from Peabody, Amy went on to earn a master’s degree in Kodály Music Education at Holy Names College, where she studied with world-renowned master teachers. Her fifty-year career included designing Kodály-inspired curriculum for and teaching young people in the Baltimore County Public Schools, the Peabody Preparatory, and the Children’s Chorus of Maryland, composing and conducting music for children’s choirs, writing textbooks and journal articles, serving as a national clinician and adjunct professor, serving numerous times as a board member of OAKE, and organizing workshops and conferences, all while maintaining a large private studio of piano and voice students.
Perhaps her most lasting contribution to Kodály-inspired music education was as the designer and long-time director of Loyola University Maryland’s American Kodály Institute, where she taught Methodology classes that included research-based innovations that enhanced the effectiveness of the Kodály curriculum. Under her leadership, the program grew into a nationally recognized master’s degree, graduating Kodály-certified educators who now serve as educational leaders across the U.S. and abroad.
In conferring the Lifetime Achievement award on Amy Carol Branum, OAKE cited her five decades of “advancing Kodály music education through visionary leadership, inspired teaching, and tireless mentorship. Amy’s innovative integration of theory and practice, her embrace of contemporary research, and her compassionate, high-expectation teaching have profoundly shaped generations of teachers and students.”
