The spring 1958 issue of The Peabody Notes, the Institute’s biannual publication between 1942 and 1980, described the “unsurpassed facilities for the teaching of music and dance” at the then-new studio building of the Preparatory Department in Towson. Instruction began there that fall in piano, voice, instruments of the band and orchestra, orchestra and choral training, as well as the fundamentals of dance and ballet.
For 68 years, the Prep’s Towson campus, designed by the Baltimore architectural firm Cochran, Stephenson and Wing, cultivated and encouraged thousands of students of the arts, young and old. This summer, as Preparatory enrollment continues to grow, Peabody moves all Preparatory operations out of the Dulaney Valley Road campus location, which has always operated under a long-term lease agreement with Goucher College. But that doesn’t mean the Prep is moving out of Towson.
“The Peabody Preparatory remains fully committed to serving Baltimore County students and families with exceptional music and dance instruction,” said Risa Carlson, interim director of the Preparatory, “and we look forward to announcing our new Towson location very soon.”
The many decades of music and dance teaching and learning at the Dulaney Valley Road location will be joyfully honored as part of the Preparatory Showcase and Celebration on June 6, which will also highlight the remarkable artistry and achievements of our students and faculty.
