Two CDs featuring faculty artist Michael Formanek, Thumbscrew and Palo Colorado Dream, were listed on allmusic.com’s Best of 2014 list of Favorite Jazz Albums. Also on that list is a CD by Ideal Bread, Beating the Teens: Songs of Steve Lacy, which features a former student of Formanek’s Adam Hopkins (GPD ’08, Jazz Double Bass). Thumbscrew’s self titled CD was also number 21 on the 2014 NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll and the Wire’s Top 50 Albums of 2014, noteworthly because few jazz recordings are on this list of all genres.
