“Where Angels Fear to Tread,” an opera composed by Mark Lanz Weiser (BM ‘ 91, Piano; MM ’93, Composition), which premiered at Peabody in 1999, opened in San Jose this past weekend. In a review by Richard Scheinin of the San Jose Mercury News, he noted of the opera, “at a time when much contemporary opera feels dry and derivative, this one has a voice.” The libretto for the opera is by Roger Brunyate, based on the E.M. Forster novel.
Another review appeared in the SFChronicleReview, calling the premiere first-rate. The San Francisco Examiner called the Weiser’s score “enveloping neo-Romantic construction, with lovely orchestral interludes and lyrical solo flights, duets and ensembles.”
The opera will run at the California Theater in San Jose, CA until February 22. Visit www.operasj.org for tickets and more information.
