
The Peabody trumpet studio and alumni were well represented at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Hershey, Pa., May 31-June 3, 2017. Peabody trumpet faculty Joe Burgstaller headlined a recital honoring his teacher David Hickman as Hickman received the ITG’s Lifetime Achievement Award and was featured in front of the Washington Symphonic Brass. Dontae Winslow (BM ’97, MM ’99, Trumpet) was a star of the conference as he soloed and rapped when he was featured in front of The United States Army Blues. Winslow also presented a clinic entitled: “How to Succeed and Monopolize Every Opportunity in the Music Industry.” Elisa Koehler (BM ’87, Music Education, Trumpet; DMA ’96 Conducting), professor at Goucher College, presented a lecture recital “Arban at the Opera.” David “Buddy” Deshler (MM ’17, Trumpet) and Joshua Ganger (MM ’14, Trumpet) both performed and presented modern music solo works (that they commissioned) at the ITG’s New Works Event. Deshler presented his commission of Stefan Schuck’s “Sounds of the Wilderness” for flugelhorn and string quartet (the showpiece of his master’s recital at Peabody this past April). Ganger premiered the piano reduction version of his commission of James Stephenson’s Concerto for Piccolo Trumpet and Wind Ensemble (a work he performed in its original version with the Peabody Wind Ensemble under Harlan Parker this past February). Burgstaller will be a featured solo artist ITG’s 2018 Conference in San Antonio, Texas, May 29 – June 2, 2018, with his new performance piece “The Recital is Dead… Long Live the Recital!”
