Helen Callus (GPD ’94, Viola) recently released a recording on Naxos of the Walton viola concerto, and collaborates with recent graduates and educates them about making their own recordings. Helen Callus’s critically acclaimed recording “British Music for Viola and Orchestra” was re-released on Naxos May 12, and it features features music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Herbert Howells, William Walton, and York Bowen. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Marc Taddei. Collaborating with students on their recordings, Callus helps them to create a polished and professional product and teaches them about the behind-the-scenes work that must happen before the recording can even begin. She comments, “There is something very unique about the recording process that really allows us as artists to refine a performance in ways we might not be able to do in a live performance. It is not as is often misunderstood, a medium where we can try things over and over again to get them right – there is no time for such indulgences and it is far too costly. The final product can sound staged and artificial if not done right, and we want to create something that can be listened to over and over but also feel live.”
