In April, Jake Runestad (MM ’11, Composition; MM ’12, Music Theory Pedagogy) released a new piece called “Elegy” — music about loss. Conductor John Byun asked Runestad to create a musical work to remember his unborn twin girls. This work explores a tradition called keening, found in numerous cultures around the globe, in which a mournful lament is sung as part of a ritual honoring those who have passed on before us. Runestad released a video of its performance by Byun and the Riverside City College Chamber Singers from the 2020 American Choral Directors Association’s Western Region Conference in early March.
