Joseph Young (AD ’09, Conducting), Peabody’s Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Artistic Director of Ensembles, conducted the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra in place of Marin Alsop on their South African Tour, Powerful Harmony, for three shows across South Africa. The three city tour saw the Orchestra in Johannesburg at the Linder Auditorium on 10 August, in Cape Town at the City Hall on 12 August, and in Gqeberha at the Feather Market Centre on 14 August. The program features soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha performing popular arias from grand operas in the first half, and Mahler’s iconic Symphony No. 5 in the second.
